William and Elizabeth Mudford's Children

William and Elizabeth had 11 children of whom 10 survived to adulthood. These children were, in birth order: John Mudford (b. 5 Nov. 1855), Johanna (Mudford) Porter (b. 18 Mar. 1857), George Nathaniel Mudford (b. 11 Jul. 1859), William Joseph Mudford (b. 17 Aug. 1863), Harriett Elizabeth Mudford (b. 29 Aug. 1863), James Mudford (b. 6 Dec. 1864), Georgina Martha (Mudford) Hockey (b. 17 May 1867), Elizabeth (Mudford) Thomson (b. 11 Aug. 1869), Daniel Peter Mudford (b. 6 Sep. 1872), Robert Mudford (b. 6 Jun. 1874) and Alice Mabel (Mudford) McIntyre (b. 1878). Harriett died at 11 weeks of age and was the only child not to survive to adulthood.

John Mudford (b. 1855, d. 1933)

John Mudford was born on November 5'th 1855 in Parnell. He attended the Blue School in Wellesley Street, Auckland and received an examination prize in 1871.

After leaving school John was apprenticed to Thomas Williams a Ship's Chandler around 1875. He was brought before the police court in 1875, accused of absenting himself from his master. In the report it mentions that his father was foreman in the loft. John was admonished by the bench and sent back to work.

John married Mary Brett in 1878. There is a report of Mary assaulting John, and the charges being withdrawn after they went to the bench.

Mary died in 1882 and there was a death notice published in the Auckland Star. There is no record of any children from the marriage.

John and Mary's Marriage registration

John married Ellen (Murphy) Stowell in 1928. However, they had been together for many years, possibly as many as forty since on John's death registration it was reported they had been married for 40 years. This is likely what Ellen reported at the time of his death. They had two children together John William Mudford who was born on the 29'th October, 1889, and Hilda (Stowell) Mudford, born 7 September 1891. John William's birth was not registered under the name Mudford until 1928, after his parents marriage had been registered. Hilda's birth was registered with a surname of Stowell, and no father. Hilda died in 1918 before her parents were married, however her death registration was under the name Mudford, and her death notice was under the name Mudford.

Electoral rolls from 1893 onwards show John living at 18 Haydn St. in the City of Auckland electorate, with the occupation of sailmaker.

Ellen had a tumultuous early life, prior to her relationship with John. She married Samuel Asa Stowell in 1877 and they had four children between 1877 and 1884. In 1885 Samuel Stowell and Ellen's younger sister Frances Margaret Murphy had a child, Herbert Rudolph Stowell. This resulted in a series of court appearances beginning in 1885 when Samuel was charged with deserting his wife. At that time he agreed to pay 15s per week support. In 1886 Ellen had a child, Hector Arthur Ngapua Stowell with Henry Matthew Stowell (aka. Hare Hongi) who was Samuel's younger brother. The final court appearances happened in 1891 at which point the support Samuel owed Ellen was reduced to 5s per week as long as his wife remained living "with her mother, or living a proper life". Samuel was then "charged with refusing to provide for the support of the illegitimate child of Frances Margaret Murphy". It seems likely that at this time Ellen was in fact living with John Mudford and was likely to have been pregnant with Hilda. All of this became too much for Samuel to cope with and he fled to New South Wales and changed his name to Harold Arthur Fairleigh. He remained in NSW until he died in 1941. He married Frances (Carrington) Fairleigh in 1894 and had a further seven children with her.

Their two eldest boys both died in 1908. William John Porter, who was still single, seems to have died suddenly on a fishing trip. While His younger brother, Frederick Thomas died in hospital.
