Stafford Family - Oldham, Lancashire to Auckland
Nathaniel Stafford was born in Oldham, Lancashire in about 1808. He married Martha Mills on 20 February 1831. They had three children: Joseph Mills Stafford who was born in 1832, Elizabeth Stafford who was born in 1834, and Thomas Mills Stafford who was born in 1836. Thomas likely died in 1837, and Martha died on January 6, 1839.
At the time of the 1841 England and Wales Census Nathan, aged 30, was living in Barker St., Oldham with his children Joseph (age 9) and Elizabeth (aged 5, although actually 7), and Peter and Sarah Mills, age 23 and 25 respectively. It is likely that Peter and Sarah Mills were Nathan's brother-in-law and his wife.
Nathaniel remarried later in 1841 to Mary Jane (Smith) Stafford. Nathaniel and Jane emigrated to Aotearoa with Elizabeth in 1842 on the Duchess of Argyle which sailed from Greenock, Scotland on 9 June 1842, and arrived in Auckland on 9 October 1842. It seems that the eldest son Joseph remained in England. However, he has not so far been found on any marriage, death or census records in England. Nathaniel and Jane had three children in New Zealand: Georgina (Stafford) Crowther, born in 1843, David George Stafford, born in 1845, and Nathaniel Stafford, born in 1847. Nathaniel died in 1888 apparently without marrying or having any children.
Nathaniel worked in the stables owned by William Crowther, who was also married to his daughter Georgina.

Georgina (Stafford) Crowther, b. 1843 Family Tree
Georgina was born soon after the family arrived in Auckland. In 1867 she married William Crowther who owned the Victoria Stables in Wellesley Street East, and ran a bus service between Auckland and Remuera. At various times Crowther served on the Auckland city council, was mayor of Auckland, and was an MP representing the City of Auckland. William and Georgina built a large house on Remuera Rd. and raised their nine children there.
